The Problem
Temporary dirt roadways used during construction of development of large tracts of land require the consumption of huge quantities of water to control dust. Construction vehicles and others passing over unpaved areas typically cause dust that exceeds U.S. Environmental Protection Agency regulations unless dust-control actions are taken. The baseline method for controlling road dust is to water the unpaved areas with water on a regular, continual basis. The baseline requires the use of water, equipment, and personnel that, if made available, could be doing other tasks. House pads, building lots, cuts and fills in construction areas, drainage swales, detention ponds on development sites require solutions for storm water management, erosion control, dust control, sediment control, elimination of TSS in run-off, and SWPPPS
The Technology
DirtGlue polymer emulsion is an environmentally friendly dust-control product used for dust suppression with soil stabilization. It is formulated specifically for soil stabilization and dust control. It has been developed to be an environmentally friendly solution to dust-control and sediment-control problems on any area where activity disturbs the soil.DirtGlue, when properly applied is diluted with water and sprayed onto a dusty surface in a manner similar to the baseline technique. DirtGlue penetrates into the soil to the desired depth and the natural bonding ability of the polymer causes the individual soil particles to attach themselves to each other forming a film or crust which eliminates dust when the surface is dry and eliminating sediment run-off when the surface is wetted during heavy rain events. This bonding causes the soil or aggregate at the surface to become more stable thereby minimizing maintenance. Properly applied to the soil, DirtGlue will not adhere to shoes or tires. It is non-corrosive and will not leach or wash from the soil. DirtGlue applications accumulate with each repeated application, which further strengthens the surface and increases the resistance to potholes, dust, and sediment. New DirtGlue sticks readily to previously applied DirtGlue.
The Alternative Technology for Heavy Traffic Areas
DustLess is, a clean, safe, odorless, organic fluid, which is non-toxic to humans, animals, marine life and plants. DustLess will not freeze in cold weather and it will not evaporate or dry out even over extended periods of time. DustLess is non-corrosive, does not contain chlorides, and is not alkaline. After initial surface application of DustLess it gradually creeps down into the soil both laterally and vertically below the surface (it is absorbed by the individual soil particles). Because of this absorption process, if reapplication for additional dust control is desired, subsequent applications will require less product for effective treatment because DustLess remains in the soil controlling dust long after the initial application. The product can be applied by water truck or hydroseeder spray applicator. Applied evenly to the roadway surface it should last 9 -12 months so long as the aggregate/soil/dirt that it is applied to remains in place (i.e.: not washed away or plowed away). After that time a reapplication if and when desired will be at about 1/4 - 1/3 the original rate to rejuvenate what is already there and lesser and lesser amounts will be used over time at longer and longer intervals as all of the soil particles become treated. DustLess does not create a slippery surface; it is not sticky. Importantly after a Dustless application, all treated areas may be used immediately.
The Application
Products from Kansas DirtGlue were applied on temporary dirt roads, house pads, slopes/embankments, and cleared or stripped areas at construction projects in the same manner as the baseline. DirtGlue Enterprises products provided much longer tem dust control as well as sediment control, and a stabilized surface where applicable. Vehicular traffic on the applied areas showed no dust or particulates in the air.
