TERRADRY

TerraDry* for the Stabilization of High Plasticity Soils

In place treatment of high plasticity road base through the effective stabilization of the soils rather than their removal and replacement is the most environmentally friendly way to cure the age old problem of soft road base or muddy soil. Ecological and efficient technologies are essential in today's construction industry that is moving more and more toward "green" solutions for construction problems. There is a constant search for ways and means to effectively conserve resources and raw materials, use less labor and less fuel, and to protect the environment. At the same time, high quality criteria must be met and costs cut.

Many paved and unpaved roads were not designed or constructed for today's traffic or were not constructed using proper methods. They are not strong enough due to poor base material. In the past, the only way to obtain a satisfactory and lasting solution was to dig up the entire roadbed and replace it with good quality aggregate.

TerraDry is the ideal Solution

Water repellency, lasting for decades, has been conferred on priceless cultural objects to protect them from environmental influences and decay.

So, why not use the same technology to provide hard, hydrophobic soils for road beds and road bases? TerraDry* a system by which inferior soil is rendered water repellent. Silty gravels and clay gravels can be treated to make a roadbed of good strength and stability. Just how strong the roadbed will be depends on the mineral composition, the proportion of gravel and the particle-size distribution. The inherent problem, however, is that the clay and silt build up a structure of fine capillaries. As a result, a compacted roadbed which has not been rendered water-repellent will absorb water. This in turn causes a reduction in stability, a reduction load-bearing capacity and a reduction frost resistance. If the road is paved, the subgrade will severely reduce the lifespan of the asphalt. DirtGlue Enterprises* TerraDry* confers total water repellency on conditioned, cohesive gravel. Capillary water uptake is thus prevented, ensuring permanently high load-bearing capacity, stability and frost resistance.

The DirtGlue Enterprises* TerraDry* System

The DirtGlue Enterprises* TerraDry* system is a combination of two complementary components developed specifically for conferring water repellency on cohesive and inferior soils encountered in earthwork and road construction. TerraDry* is a liquid which builds up a silicone resin network in the capillaries, thus rendering the soil water-repellent. TerraDry* is not a binder. Load-bearing capacity, stability and frost resistance are conferred on the soil by the natural minerals. TerraDry* has no effect on particle-size distribution, soil strength indices or the soil's chemical composition. Soils treated with TerraDry* have the properties of a traditional gravel roadbed. TerraDry* is delivered straight to the construction site in 275 gallon IBC plastic totes. TerraDry* can be used in concentrated form, or diluted as required at the construction site

Another major advantage is that the additive is mixed very thoroughly with the soil, even if the latter is exceptionally fine and cohesive. The good mixing, together with the natural water content (water is the distribution medium), ensures a soil of superlative quality and reliability.

Photo above shows a portion of road with added TerraDry* ready for grading and compacting. The soil's water repellency or hydrophobicity, which is synonymous with a reduction in capillary water uptake, guarantees that the density (CBR) values are permanently retained.

Existing roads which have poor quality soils in the base or subgrade such that they have insufficient load-bearing capacity for today's traffic are treated with TerraDry* by means of the "mixed-in-place" process. There is no need to replace the roadbed. If widening the roadbed is desired or required this may also be done during the application process without bringing in additional material. The end result is that the necessary load-bearing capacity and frost resistance is introduced and trucking is eliminated. The way in which full depth reclamation equipment (pulvimixers) operate guarantees excellent mixing of TerraDry* into the roadbase prior to compaction. Pulvimixers/Recyclers/Full Depth Reclamation Equipment such as BOMAG MPH 120, Raco 250, Bitelli ST 200, or equivalent allow treatment with TerraDry* in a single operation.

A Wide Variety of Applications

TerraDry* is ideal for a great many different stabilization challenges! It eliminates mud on dirt roads, it solidifies less than perfect soils on new construction projects, and when repairing existing roads. TerraDry* offers a less costly solution with a lower environmental impact, for long term stabilization.

Convincing Arguments

Environmental protection and ecological awareness, NO exchange of material and therefore substantially less truck movement to and from the construction site

Less traffic on roads and through villages, and therefore greater safety
Less noise and air pollution
Less wear on the roads in the vicinity of the construction site

Excavating the roadbed of a 1mile (1600M) portion of a road measuring 20 feet (6M) in width, 1 foot (0.3M) deep produces about 4000 cubic yards (3100M3) of earthen waste that must be hauled away and then the same amount of good aggregate must then be hauled in for replacement. In a conventional road-repair project, this would entail hauling 220 truck-loads away from the site and later delivering 220 loads of quality gravel aggregate back to the site for replacement infill. All in all, this imposes a huge burden on the environment from fuel burn and distress to the local infrastructure from heavy trucking as well as a nuisance to the local population. Repairing the above road example with the DirtGlue Enterprises* TerraDry* system eliminates all haulage of material for roads which will remain unpaved and reduces haulage to only 12 truck-loads of asphalt if the road is to be resurfaced using asphalt pavement. The use of in-situ cohesive and inferior soils reduces consumption of expensive and irreplaceable gravel, saves large amounts of fuel while reducing the disposal issues associated with the waste soils.

Less time needed

Substantially shorter construction times

Pulverizing/mixing to a depth of 6 inches (15cm) to well over 18 inches (46cm) a single operation
Same-day compaction is possible
When asphalt resurfacing is required, the surfacing can be applied the very next day
The traffic need not be stopped while work is going on

Reduced costs and better for the environment

Economical and efficient roadbed conditioning and treatment using pulvimixers can be employed without problem in isolated areas and in difficult terrain. Pulvimixers are maneuverable and have a high daily capacity.
Optimal organization at the construction site and low installation costs
No expenses for loading, hauling, or gravel delivery and no landfill costs
Very low environmental impact relative to the other effective options

Safety, High Quality, Comprehensive

Thorough and reliable preliminary testing in-situ and/or when necessary in the laboratory
Treatment to be assessed on the basis of soil plasticity, deflection, particle-size distribution, Proctor values, CBR
Project assessment and support to recognized industry standards
A detailed report contains a comprehensive assessment of the substructure, the roadbed to be treated and the surfacing. It provides information on the feasibility and effectiveness of the system and of the entire project, and may include supplementary advice for example necessary modifications and additional considerations to facilitate decisions by the client and the engineer in charge
Thorough planning and organization of the construction site
At last, a system which is both ecologically sound and relatively inexpensive.
